Butted or Riveted

Most authentic chain maille is made using either solid or riveted rings. If you are going to be fighting against people who are really trying to kill you then I suggest you learn how to do riveted maille. For most of us though butted maille will do quite well (and is a lot quicker to make).

If you are making butted maille the process is:
  • Wind the wire around the mandril
  • Cut the wire "spring" into rings
  • Join the rings together with 2 sets of pliers
For riveted maille the process is:
  • Wind the wire around the mandril
  • Cut the wire "spring" into rings (the rings must be cut with a 5mm overlap, special cutting tools are required)
  • heat treat the rings to make them soft (do not do this to galvanised wire)
  • hammer the overlap of each ring flat
  • heat treat the rings again
  • punch a hole in each ring where they overlap (you will need a special tool for this)
  • place the ring into the maille in the appropriate location
  • using special pliers insert a rivet into the hole in the ring to rivet the two ends together
